FAQ

What is the job description for a mechanic in a car?

There are three major areas of employment that car mechanics work in:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people consider becoming a mechanic. This is the best way to get started. Either you can work in a shop that is owned by another person or start your own business.

If you are interested in working at a shop you will need to apply for membership to a union. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

After you register, you will be granted a license for your garage to operate.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It will not permit you to fix major engine issues.

Apart from selling spare parts, customers will also expect you to provide guidance and advice.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships will hire graduates straight from college. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Independent garages can pay higher wages because they aren't associated with any company. As a result, these jobs are generally better paid than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages may not be better places to work. Many business owners prefer to manage their own businesses rather than delegating responsibility to others.

You might find yourself working long hours but having no control over what happens in the day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

The good news is that you can easily switch between different kinds of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

If you prefer to work in an independent garage, you might consider applying directly to its owner.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

Consider, for example, what type of vehicle you are repairing and whether additional labor charges will apply.

Is it really worth becoming a mechanic.

The answer to this question depends on what you want from life if you are looking for money, then yes, but if you're looking for meaning and purpose, then no.

If you don’t have any mechanical skills, it’s pointless to get into it. It will just waste your time. It's not going make you millionaire. It's unlikely that you will be famous. And it's unlikely to change your life.

This would require you to spend many years learning how to properly do everything. It would be expensive to have your car fixed by someone else. Most people won't bother to do it. They find something better.

Let's sum it up: If you want to make a lot of money, then do so. However, if you want to have a meaningful and fulfilling life, avoid the mechanic's trade.

What are the requirements for an automotive technician?

You must have high school, or GED, and be able to read and write well in English and math. It is also necessary to be able both to read and to write. Before you can start working, you will have to pass a written exam and take a series practical tests.

What is the best career for an automotive mechanic?

If you are determined to excel, the automotive industry offers many opportunities. Working hard and learning from others is the best way to be successful in this field.

Communication skills are important as customers and coworkers will often be your main focus. You should also be willing to travel and work long hours, making commuting difficult.

Take classes at community colleges or universities if you're interested to work in automotive. Many schools offer programs for students who are interested to learn about auto sales, customer service, or repair.

You should choose to study mechanical engineering if you want to get a degree. You can earn a bachelor's in as little four years.

In addition, many companies will hire graduates straight out of school. It's a smart idea to begin looking for work while you have the opportunity to study part-time.

Once you've completed your education, you'll probably need to complete some form of training before being able to take up a position as an automotive technician.

This means that you will need to pass tests such as the Automotive Excellence (ASE) certification exam. This test covers topics such engine maintenance as brakes, steering, suspension, etc.

Once you've passed the ASE test, you can apply for a license issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

A license permits you to repair private vehicles. You will be compensated based on how many services you performed.

Not all states require licensing. You will need a license if you want to work in a different state.

Some states don’t issue licenses until a certain amount has been completed. If this is you, you may need another option.

How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she works in car dealerships as well as auto shops, garages, and service centers. He/she works with customers to repair their cars and trucks, ATVs or snowmobiles. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. One section tests knowledge of mechanical components, while the other section tests skills in practical areas. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. In addition, some states license technicians immediately after they receive their license, while others wait until they have completed at least six months of employment as an automotive technician.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs usually last three years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

There are many factors that affect the salary of an automotive technician, such as where they live, their education and experience. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salary increases can be common. A professional who earns less that $30,000 today could reasonably expect a $40,000 increase in the next few decades.
