FAQ

Is it important which college I go?

You're wrong. There is no difference between colleges in terms of how to get into the automobile industry. However, some schools offer better programs than others so if you're looking for something more specialized, look elsewhere.

Is it hard being a mechanic apprentice

It's not simple, but you can learn quickly and there are many avenues for advancement.

You will need to be patient and persevering. You must also know how to fix cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

Customers and family members can put a lot pressure on you. They want you to succeed. You should not feel pressured into making difficult decisions.

If you like fixing cars, this could be a great career option. This is a job that allows you to earn a decent income and grow your business.

You might choose to take a different route. This is where you might be interested in becoming a technician.

This could involve using your technical knowledge to support other employees. Technical support could include helping technicians to troubleshoot issues or teaching them new techniques.

Another option is to be a service advisor. This is where you can offer advice and assistance to customers who bring their vehicles to a garage.

The decision you make will depend on what you are looking for. There are many options, so you can choose the one that suits you best.

What are the different types of jobs available in car mechanic?

There are three major areas of employment that car mechanics work in:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. In fact, it's probably the easiest way to get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

You will need to join a union if you want to work in a shop. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

If you decide to open your own garage, you'll need to register with the government. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

As well as selling spare parts you will need to offer advice and direction to customers.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. They might specialize in one area, such as brakes and tires.

However, some dealerships also hire general mechanics who can handle all aspects of car repairs.

Some positions require that applicants complete training before they can be allowed to work. Employers are able to choose which candidates will best suit their position.

Some dealerships hire students straight out of college. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. They are more focused on providing top-quality service.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. Because these jobs don't have to be associated with any company, they can generally offer better wages than dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many business owners prefer to be in control of their businesses than to delegate it to employees.

You might find yourself working long hours but having no control over what happens in the day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

There are many jobs that can be switched between. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. Many other factors can also influence the amount you earn.

This could include the type of vehicle that you are working on and whether or not you charge an additional for labor.

How do I fix my car for a hobby?

Take up a hobby in car repair if you have an interest. You could learn how to repair them, buy parts for them, sell them or just enjoy them. It would make a great pastime if you're looking for something different to do.

But it is not easy to turn this into your full-time occupation. It requires hard work and dedication. And you'll need to invest a lot of money too.

If you don't have any good reasons to be involved in cars, it may be better to just let it go.

Is it really worth becoming a mechanic.

This question is dependent on your life goals. If you are looking to make money, then yes. But if meaning and purpose is what you seek, then no.

You don't need to be a mechanic if you don't know how. It won't make you wealthy. It won't make your name famous. You won't be famous.

You'd have to spend years learning how things work. You would still need to hire someone to fix your car if it breaks down. It's the reason most people don't bother. They find something better to do instead.

You can make a lot of money if you are looking to do well. But if you want to live a meaningful life, stay away from the mechanic's industry.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
