What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. This is the best way to get started. You can either work at a shop owned by someone else or set up your own business.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

After completing the training, you'll be ready to start work.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

After you register, you will be granted a license for your garage to operate.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

In addition to selling spare parts, you'll also be expected to offer advice and guidance to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who can specialize in a particular area of the car. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

These positions often require applicants that they undergo special training before being allowed work. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships even recruit graduates straight from university. These graduates have no difficulty learning about cars because they already know the basics and principles of mechanical engineering.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. They are more focused on providing top-quality service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages may not be better places to work. Many owners prefer to run their businesses themselves rather than delegate responsibility to employees.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. There are plenty of other factors that influence how much you earn.

You might also consider the vehicle type you repair, and whether extra labor is charged.

After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. One section tests knowledge of mechanical components, while the other section tests skills in practical areas. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were almost 1.7 million available jobs in the automotive mechanic field in 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020.
