FAQ

Can I work as an auto mechanic without a degree? Can I study part time?

A degree isn't necessary, but it certainly helps. Employers will prefer candidates who have completed a degree. It shows that you've put the effort in and have done everything possible to succeed.

It doesn't mean that you can't work while you study. Some universities permit students to do coursework during summer holidays and complete their studies later in a year. Students can also take classes part time throughout the academic year.

What are the requirements of an automotive technician?

You need to have high school diploma or GED and good grades in English as well as maths. It is also necessary to be able both to read and to write. After passing a written test, you will need to complete a series of practical tests before you are allowed to begin working.

What is the difference between an automotive technician and a mechanic?

Both are related, but they are not the same. Both a mechanic and an automotive technician can repair cars.

A mechanic must possess good manual dexterity, and be able perform simple tasks efficiently. They must also be able to diagnose problems accurately and repair them effectively.

An automotive technician requires more technical skills than a mechanic. They should be able read blueprints and use tools like drills and wrenches.

They must also be able to carry out complex procedures safely. They must also be familiar with different types of engines and electrical systems.

They must also understand the interplay of different parts.

This means that mechanics usually make less money than automotive technicians. There are many job opportunities in both.

What does it matter which college I attend?

Not really. There is no difference in the programs offered by colleges for getting into automotive work. There are some schools that offer more specific programs than others.

Is it hard to get a job working as an auto mechanic?

Yes, it is possible. Many garages have vacancies that are advertised online. Many people apply because they think it will be fun. You can apply for several places to see if they are accepting student applications if you want to get your foot in their door. If you don't know anyone working in the industry, ask your friends and relatives. They might be willing to recommend someone.

How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works in car dealerships as well as auto shops, garages, and service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. It varies depending on the location of the applicant. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. In addition, some states license technicians immediately after they receive their license, while others wait until they have completed at least six months of employment as an automotive technician.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes when needed.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
