FAQ

Is it worth being a mechanic.

The answer to this question will depend on your goals for life. If you are looking for financial gain, then yes. However, if purpose and meaning are what you seek, then no.

It's not worth learning mechanics if you don’t have the skills. You'll waste your time. It will not make you rich. It will not make you famous. It's unlikely that it will change your life.

You'd have to spend years learning how things work. Also, you would need to hire someone else to fix it if it broke down. That's why most people don't bother doing it at all. They find something better to do instead.

In conclusion, if money is your main goal, you should go ahead. However, if you want to have a meaningful and fulfilling life, avoid the mechanic's trade.

What are the qualifications for an automotive technician

High school graduation or GED is required with excellent grades in English and math. Also, you must be able read and write. The written test will be passed and you will then have to take several practical exams before you can begin work.

What are the different types of jobs available in car mechanic?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. It's also the easiest way you can get started. Either work for someone else's shop or you can start your own.

If you choose to work at a store, you need to join a union. After you are accepted to the union, you will receive training from it.

You'll be ready for work once you have completed the training.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. Once you have registered, certain standards will be enforced.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

Your license allows you to sell spare parts and make minor repairs. It will not permit you to fix major engine issues.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics that specialize in one aspect of the vehicle. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

However, some dealerships also hire general mechanics who can handle all aspects of car repairs.

These positions often require applicants that they undergo special training before being allowed work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships even recruit graduates straight from university. These graduates already have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering, so they are able to learn all about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. This makes them generally more well-paid than jobs at dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many business owners prefer to be in control of their businesses than to delegate it to employees.

You may find yourself working for long hours and not having control over the day.

Also, expect to make lower wages than if your job was at a dealership.

The good news is that you can easily switch between different kinds of jobs. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

The bad news is that finding a new job isn't always easy. You can earn more depending on many other factors.

Consider, for example, what type of vehicle you are repairing and whether additional labor charges will apply.

Are you looking for a career as an automotive mechanic?

The automotive industry is full of exciting opportunities for those who are dedicated to excellence. The best way to succeed in this field is by working hard and learning as much as possible from others.

Your job will require you to be a good communicator as you'll be talking to customers and other employees. It's important to be flexible and willing to travel. This will make commutes difficult.

You can take classes at universities and community colleges if you are interested in a career as an automotive technician. Many schools offer programs specifically designed for students interested in auto repair, sales, or customer service.

Studying mechanical engineering is an option if you're interested in pursuing a degree. You can get your bachelor's degree in as little as four years.

In addition, many companies will hire graduates straight out of school. It's a smart idea to begin looking for work while you have the opportunity to study part-time.

After you have completed your education, you will likely need some training to be able to work as an automotive technician.

This means that you must pass the Automotive Service Excellence exam. This exam covers topics such as engine maintenance, brakes and suspension.

After passing the ASE test you can apply for a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE) license.

A license permits you to repair private vehicles. Based on the services rendered, you will receive compensation.

Not all states require licensing. You will need a license if you want to work in a different state.

Some states do not issue licenses until they have received a certain amount or training. This may be the case for you.

How To

How to Become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works at car dealerships, auto shops, garages, service centers, etc. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test, you will need to visit an authorized testing location. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs last about three years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

Automotive technicians' salaries depend on many factors such as the employer, whereabouts, education level and experience. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. And those with master's degrees made around $32,000 per year. Salary increases can be common. A professional who earns less that $30,000 today could reasonably expect a $40,000 increase in the next few decades.
